NOTES ON THE RACING. From Our Own Correspondent. Wanganui, Last Night. Contrary to expectations, the weather was fine for the opening day of the Wanganui Winter Meeting, x though a cold wind blowing made matters very chilly. The course was in good ordet, and the racing keen. The only mishaps occurred in the Hack Steeples, and Purua Handicap. In the former Salopian fell at the second hurdle from home, breaking his neck and bringing down Tyrannic and Bismarck. Lockwood was going well in front in the Purua Handicap, when he stumbled, being badly cut about through being galloped on. All the jockeys escaped injury. Punters began well by sorting out Postillion and Ineuru for the Borough Handicap. Grattan made the running to Hie bond, where Ineuru took command. Postillion came with a late run and won nicely. Leolanter was withdrawn from the Hack Steeple, the bracketed pair Fireworks and Salopian, being better backed than Kauroa.. The latter led practically all the way, and came into the straight lengths clear of the opposition. In the run home he was eased to a canter. Ranter came fast and almost beat him on the post. Fireworks was a poor third, and then came Le Vent and Rebel

All started in the Wanganui Steeple. The Native was favourite, Glenmore, Okaihau and Dorando being next best backed. Glenmore repeated his stable mate, Kauroa's performance, and won a slow race from end to end. Leolanter shaped surprisingly well, being prominent all the way. Dorando ran up to second place three furlongs from home, but could not stall off" Leolanter's finishing run. The Spaniard finished fourth, and then came Okaihau, Whimper, Bravest, Antarctic, and The Native. The latter jumped well but was in trouble half a mile from home. All got round without mishap. Watehchain, Sea Queen and Serenity divided favouritism in the hack hurdles, but the first-named] could only get, third to outsiders in Morning and" Goodwin Park. Sea Queen jumped well, but tired after going a mile. - Thrave jumped badlv.

Chief Marshall, Marton. Darby Paul, and Ngatimaru were solidly supported in the Century Hurdles. Contrary to usual tactics, Bercola was rushed' *i the front and was always handy. St. Kevin led into the straight, but Bercola joined the leader below the distance, and in a, punishing finish, won bv n length. Chief Marshall fell in front of the stand. Darby Paul was kept a long way back,

i'liil Xg:iiiinani struck ."'-wr.'il fences, Miirtoii finished elo.se up, fourth.

AH stalled in the Puma Hack Handicap. Mini nner was an odds on favourite. Invader got out first, but the weight settled his chance.. Lockwood led "for live furlongs, then fell, interfering with the favourite. Austin and Sweet Zinnia led into the straight, the km-jianiiMl winning comfortably. Mummer came fast, just missing second money. St. Serf finished close up.
