. Air. 11. J. Okey, M.P., for Taranaki, is at present visiting Wellington Mr. A. W. Hood', of the Wairarapa, and formerly of Rahotu, is at present on a sliort visit to New Plymouth. Mr. 11. H. Ostler was last, night ejected chairman of the Victoria College Council in succession to Mr. Charles Wilson.
Private advices from London state that Sir Joseph Ward will probably return to New Zealand about the middle of July
Mr. George Howell, of the P.-,ha staff of the Bank of New Zealand, was p:esented with a purse of sovereigns on the occasion, of his departure for Manaia. The late Mr. Marcus Clarke, founder of the firm of Marcus Clarke and Co, of Sydney, left property valued for probate at £372,057. This is bequeathed to his widow and children and relatives.
Archdeacon Neild, of Dunedin, has been appointed general secretary of the Melanestan Mission and Commissary to the Bishop of Melanesia,. He will' remove to Auckland at the end of ,ncxt month.
Mr. F. C. Bellringer was yesterday reelected chairman of tire Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, members being unanimous in their appreciation of Mr. Bellringer's capable services in this important position; Mr. David A. Sturroek, who has been appointed to the position of Inspector for Schools in the Marlborough district, in succession to Mr. 1). A. Strachan. M. A., resigned, has been hdadinaster of r.yiej Blenheim borough schools' for the last! nineteen years
Mr F. L. Carter, M.A., of Clifton. England, has arrived in New Zealand to take up a position at Christ's College, Christchurch, for a year, under the scheme ueeided) upon by the Board of Governors for the interchange of musters with some of the Home colleges.
Letters were received from tlie Rev. S. »S. Osborne and Archdeacon Evans, by the Central School Committee on Tuesday evening, resigning their positions 011 the committee. It was decided to recommend for election Messrs. W. F. vShort and' A. Milne, the highest unsuccessful candidates on the poll at the householders' meeting. The Hon. A, T-'Uerdnum, Minister for Justice, will It. this morning for Wellington. The "Minister yesterday inspected the New Plymouth gaol," but, interviewed by a ''News" representative, had nothing to communicate on the results of his visit. Last evening, the Minister was entertained at a banquet by the Taranaki Law Society.
Mrs. Doekrill, one of the new members of the Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, was welcomed at the meeting of the Board yesterday, the Chairman remarking that her appearance at the table marked a now departure in the history of hospital administration in New Plymouth, but assured members that no anxiety need lie felt with the member elected. Mrs. Doekrill stated, in replv, that she did not feel a stranger at the meeting, since among the members were many old friends and school chums.
