TAXI-DRIVERS' OBLIGATION.
LEGAL FARE MUST BE TAKEN. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Tuesday. A case involving the obligation upon a licensed taxi-driver to accept a fare when not engaged was heard at the Police Court this morning, Frank Norman being charged Avith refusing to carry a young lady on April 27, though the legal fare was tendered. It was alleged that Norman refused, saying the run was too short.
Mr. Cutten, S.M., said the point was of some importance, because, unless the bylaw was enforced, the regulations fixing fares were useless. Drivers might refuse to hire unless an unreasonable fare were promised. He would not impose a severe penalty this time, but would inflict a fine of ten shillings.
