UNION OF SKILLED SEA-GOING MEN. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Tuesday. The Post states that a combination of the New Zealand branches of the Merchant Service -Guild and Marine Engineers' Institute has been established. The question of. the collaboration of mates and engineers of the local fleets has been contemplated for some time, but it was not until yesterday that the representatives appointed to act on behalf of both parties met and wore constituted a joint committee, which has undertaken considerable responsibilities. It is expected this movement will spread to Australia and, if taken up there as in New Zealand, the result will probably be the formation of a powerful combination of skilled sea-going men throughout Australasia.
LABOR IN WELLINGTON. Wellington, Tuesday. Mr. Luke, the Mayor, interviewed as to the winter outlook, said the unemployed question was becoming more acute as the winter advanced. Wellington would probably be able to accommodate its own surplus, but he sounded a note of warning to outsiders. Wellington would have to live on its income this year, and no loans would be raised for works, so it was useless coming here . There were only small works to be carried out, and they were scarcely adequate to absorb all the men that would be offering.
