ENTERTAINED IN CHRISTCHURCII. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. Though the weather was cold and overcast to-day there was a large attendance on the Metropolitan Trotting Club's grounds at Addington, where a sports gathering for the men of H.M.S. New Zealand was held. Amongst those present were the Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes, Captain Blont and the Mayor of Christchurch. Several athletic events were well contested, and proved very interesting. The star item was the field gun display by two teams under Chief PettyolHccr Sweeney. The manoeuvres which were gone through were smartly and etfectively done, and the display was thoroughly enjoyed. An exhibition trotting race was another feature of great interest. Secret handicaps were fixed, and no odicial times were taken. The race resulted as follows:—Emmeline 1, Bright 2, Bell is 3. During the day a very large number of school children and adults visited the ship. To-morrow two hundred seamen will be taken for a motor drive to Rangiora. where sports will be. held. In the evening a ball will be tendered by the citizens to the officers of the warship. The Prime Minister and the Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes will accompany the men to Rangiora.
Mr. Massey will confer in Christchurch with Captain Halsey as to the possibility of H.M.S. Now Zealand towing the liidrabarah off the Rangitikei beach, as suggested by Mr. Fletcher, chairman of the Wellington Harbor Board.
