Sir Gerald Lowther, British Ambassador at Constantinople, has resigned owing to ill-health. The settlers of Wairarapu are organising a "welcome home" in Sir Waiter Buchanan, M.l'. A cable from Rome yesterday states that the Pope received the' Bishop of Perth, the first Briton he has received since his illness. Mr. A. W. Packard, of the literary staff of the Daily News, who is joining the Wellington Post, was appreciatively farewelled by his colleagues last night, and presented with ;•, set of use-, ful reference books. A Wellington telegram states that the election of a representative of the Post and Telcgrapl.l Department on the Public Service Appeal Board, resulted as follows: — V. M. Scully (New Plymouth), ]()!)! votes: L. Anderson (Dunedin), 7tiH; informal, 29, The late Judge Casey, who died at St. Kinda (Victoria), on April 5, left an estate valued at £3418. He bequeathed £IOOO to the Koman Catholic Archbishop to form the nucleus of a fund towards building a Iloman Catholic College in I connection with the University of Melj bourne. ' Mr, J. H. Knowles, who was chief engineer on the dredge Paritutu during her voyage out from Home and for some time afterwards, is at present on a visit to New Plymouth. Mr. Knowles is attached to the staff of the Inspector of Machinery Department, and is stationed in Christchurch, The death occurred at Wellington yesterday of Thomas Reynolds Hackett, a veteran of the Crimean and Maori wars, aged 70. He nvas at, Inkerman* and Balaklava, and came to New Zealand in 1801 with the 57th Regiment. He was for many years in the service of the Telegrapli Department, and only retired last March. The following being the only nominations received will constitute the Board of Control of the New Zealand Sports Protection League:—President, Sir George Clifford; vice-president, Mr. C. P. Skerrett, K.C.; members: Hon. Dr. Collins, M.L.C.; Mr. Lan G. Duncan, Mr. J. H. B. Coates, and Mr. C. W. Tringham. A Press As&ociation telegram from Hastings records the death of Mr. James Garnett, Mayor of that town, aged »>7. He underwent an operation for appendicitis three weeks ago. Deceased was . a member of a number of local bodies; he .was electei Mayor in 10H, and was returned unopposed for two successive terms. He leaves a widow and five sons. \ At a meeting of the Wellington district of the H.A.C.B.S. Council, presided over by Bro. J. W. Callaghan last evening, a resolution was carried tendering this Grace Archbishop O'Shcn the heartiest congratulations of the members at the great honor conferred on him by his Holiness the Pope in creating him Coadjutor Archbishop of Wellington, and assuring him of the heartiest support and unswerving loyalty of the officers and members in the exalted position to which he had been raised, and its consequent responsibility.
