INGLEWOOD NEWS.

i I i [ INSTALLATION OF MAYOR. j (From Our Own Correspondent). The new Mayor of luglewood (Mr. • George Young) was duly installed in office at the Council Chambers on Wednesday evening. Mr. G. Bennett, the re- * tiring Mayor, opening the proceedings by welcoming the new Mayor to his office. His time to vacate the chair had now \ arrived, and there was, he said, no man j more fitted to fill the vacancy than Mr. j i Young. He hoped the new Mayor would : receive that measure of courtesy and respect from the Council which had been : his portion while in the Mayoral chair. Before retiring he would like to recommend to them the careful administration of the electric light department along the lines contemplated by the late Council when buying the plant. They ,s must be ready to meet all contingencies, 1 but, judiciously handled, the department i would prove one of the best investments ( the Borough had ever possessed. He « held the view that profits from the elec- J trie light department should go to the, 1 ratepayers, perhaps, he suggested, by - reduction of rates, if the profit from the .1 department should warrant it. He had < been on the Council ever since Inglewood, had been a Borough, and it came r strangely to him now to drop his hart ness. I The new Mayor then made the usual e ' declaration, and, in a few suitable words, I thanked Mr. Bennett for his welcome, 1: I and expressed a desire to work with the ,1 Council in accomplishing the greatest \ I good to the largest number, of rate- ) I pavers. He endorsed the retiring t 1 Mayor's 'remailcs,' anent the Electric Light Department, and welcomed all old t Councillors, whom he was pleased to e see again at the Council table. v Members of the Council congratulated }, the Mayor on his election. Mr. Bennett then took leave of the Council wishing j, them good luck and prosperity. INGLEWOOD BOROUGH COUNCIL. i] The new Inglewood Borough Council „ held its first meeting on Wednesday evening. The business was fairly light, and was despatched with a facility which might be emulated by other bodies. r The Mayor brought down a reeommen- c dation from the old Hall Committee, a that the interior of the new Parish Hall a should be constructed by the Karara.'.t Cementing Company of their felt and C concrete lining at an additional cost of " £4O. A specimen of the material was I produced. The recommendation was con- c firmed ■ A letter was read from the Prime p Minister stating that the re-valuation of c the Borough would be proceeded with as a soon as possible, and that the new valuations would be available for the rating ' year 1913-1914. The Prime Minister also acknowledged a resolution from the Council respecting a proposed tax on motor cars and cycles, which had been referred to the Public Works Department. The Post ] and Telegraph Department notified the J Council that they could not under the regulations accept deposits from a Borough Council. v Notice was received from Mr. Gudgeon £ of his intention to apply for a renewal of his lease on expiry. <. The Taranaki Hospital and Charitable L Aid Board notified that the Council's share towards the erection of a new Hob- j. pital would be £393, and the clerk was r instructed to write to the Board for j the approximate date when the money would be required, so as to allow the i Council time to finance. The matter a was left to the Finance Committee, with c power to act. The action of the Mayor in telegraphing to the Minister of Internal Affairs r requesting an extension of the Dreadnought's visit to Taranaki was confirmed. „ ~ . A petition was laid before the Council from its employees asking that they be paid fortnightlv and was acceded to. Another petition was presented from j | a number of residents praying that Carrington street be opened from Cutfield street to Brown street as soon as possible. The Mayor explained that this street had been 'denuded of its sand for filling-in purposes in another area and closed to vehicular traffic until funds i would permit of its being opened. The Council bad had considerable trouble with one resident who desired a back entrance to his property, and who, instead of asking the Council formally to pro- ( vide one had taken down their fence. Councillor Gibbs pointed out that many signatories to the petition were not ratepayers. It was resolved to ask the foreman for an estimate of the cost of opening the street. The following committees were elected—Finance: The Mayor and Crs. Gibbs and Tavlor: Cemetery and Reserves: Crs Gibbs, Spnrdle and Humphrey; Works: The Mavor and Crs. Tarplee and Fawcett; Street Lighting: The Mayor and Cr. Humphreys; Hall and Electri- ] cal Department: The Mayor and Crs. Gibbs and Tarplee; Baths: Crs. Gibbs, Humphreys and Taylor. Cr. Spurdle was appointed the Council's representative on the Library Committee. ; The monthly .meeting was fixed for the first Wednesday in each month. The Mavor and Cr. Gibbs were authorised to sign cheques. Mr. .T. K. Bennett was appointed dogtax collector.
