THE NEW HEBRIDES.

STATEMENT BY A MISSIONARY. By Telegraph —Press Association. Auckland, Wednesday. The Rev. F.Paton, a leading worker in the Presbyterian mission, is a passenger by the Marama, bound for Sydney. Interviewed, he said that during his visit to England he interviewed the Colonial Office' officials and discussed the government of the New Hebrides. The French authorities were as keen as the English ones about preserving their interests in those islands, but knew the dual government was rotten. Australia and New Zealand were seriously concerned about the inaction of the French in not keeping down the Japanese influx. By using these islands the colored races could swoop down on New , Zealand. It had been seriously suggested that 'the French settlers should be bought out for about £250,000. This would be the cheapest form of insurance for New Zealand and Australia.
