"HANDY MAN" OF THE DOMINION.

THE TEACHER. In .these times ivbei) salaries are being recast, the following is well worth consideration: — Jack Tar is usually .considered to be a handy man, hut lie- cannot hold. a candle to a Dominion schoolmaster, 'When the latter has dodged the Department, squared the Board, satisfied the committee, put off tlje parents and tackled the chief inspectors, three in number, and the nature study inspector, and listened to and 1 ' then followed the diiections of the dairy expert re tests for butter-fat, and used lacometers and acidometers, and collected leaves and [bark and fruit and (lowers, and drawn out schemes of work for the year, and arranged for the next concert and entered "his pupils for the show, and sent in his truancy returns and satisfied himself that no epidemics are raging, and put in Saturday morning at the field club, and Saturday afternoon at the chemistry classes, and done his week s work at the woodwork, and put in his Sandow drill, he can do two hours' gardening and two hours' brush work and two hours' design; and- when the weather permits, chase the giddy butterlly or locusts or catch the elusive frog for microscopic research, or mcasuie his scholars and give particulars to Dr. Mason about their ancestors, disease, etc., and measure squares, triangles and circles on the rolling meadow with the school tape. Of course, if time permits, he is expected to give a lesson now and then on such subjects as reading English composition, and writing, but as these are not really essential, no harm is done if these lessons are merely outlined. If time permits, and it is expected room will be found on the time-table, lessons and discourses may be given on hygiene, health and conduct and character, and the remainder of the time devoted to bee-keeping. This last is recommended as a highly diverting and instructive break in the monotony of the daily task, being not only technically interesting, but also profitable.—Exchange.
