MINISTER FOR RAILWAYS.
DEPUTATIONS IN TIMARU. Per Press Association. . Timaru, Last Night. Mr. Herrics, Minister for Railways, in the course of his tour of inspection, of the southern lines, reached Timaru this afternoon. He opened the new Ambulance Hall with appreciative remarks on the value of the brigade work. A deputation of business men waited on the Minister to ask for improved facilities for working trucks on the wharf; also the enlargement of the passenger station and the shunting yard. Mr. Herries piomised that the officers accompanying him shall enquire into the matter of wharf facilities. As to enlarging the station, that depended on whether a special loan could be raised for such purposes. He must await Mr. James Allen's advice on the subject. The deputation pointed out the inconvenience of the twopence charge to enter the platform when the expresses were in, as it was difficult to get tickets/and asked that an annual ticket be issued' at a reasonable rate. The Mjjiistgr thought this a reasonable request. A deputation' of the Navy League asked for an excursion train from Waimate to tyttelton to -convey South Canterbury school children to Lyttelton to see the wat- ' ship if rough weather prevents tlmir seeing her at Timaru. The train was promised if really desired. ■. There will be other deputations to-morrow mora- " ing, and then the Minister will inspect the Fairlie line. • ,
