A COLD-BLOODED MURDER.
SYDNEY TRAGEDY. POLICE SERGEANT SHOT.

Sergeant Edwin Hickey and, Constable Barclay went to St. Ives to serve two committment warrants upon Thomas Edwin Brown, orchardist, aged fifty. They found Brown at the foot of his orchard. When he learned their business he invited the-officers to come into the house. The trio walked there chatting amicably. Brown led the officers into .the sittingroom, and then, turning round, asked "what they meant *by coming to liis house, and ordered them out. Constable Barclay told Brown to consider himself under arrest. The members of the family then entered the room. Constable Barclay attempted to seize Brown, and one of the sons got between them and pushed Barclay away. Sergeant Hickey jumped towards Brown, and was almost touching him when three shots rang out in quick succession, and a 'fourth a little later. Sergeant Hickey collapsed immediately, with three bui'lets in his stomach. The fourth struck the son's wrist. . Sergeant Hickey died on the way to the hospital. Brown was to-dav charged with murder, and remanded. He has attracted considerable public attention of late years, owing to his persistent appearance at the Supreme Court and other courts as a' litigant. He filed affidavits on various occasion? alleging corruption' among the judiciary, law officers and a number of high officials.- Sergeant Hickey was a native of New South Wales, and was aged 5*2. He joined the service in 1381, and was generally well liked. He was tactful and, very highly. esteemed by his superior officers.
