AUSTRIA'S INTENTIONS. FOKCrXG THE TOWERS' HANDS. ITALY TO CO-OPERATE.
©y Cable —Press Association—Copyright. Received 1, 11.20 p.m. I«ndon, May 1. / -The latest statement of Austria's indentions is that unless Montenegro meantime yields, to-day's conference of Ambassadors will be informed that Austria reserves of action. It will be ■optiqnal ; .lor others to join with her. particular form of action has not ' yet been settled, but there are indications 'that -in the event of intervention alone, Austria, in order to spare Russian feeling, contemplates operating against Scutari from the Albanian and not the ■Montenegrin side. It is understood that should Austria occupy Scutari or the liovtchen Heights and Tiocche di Cattaro, ' Italy will occupy Avlona and Santi •Quaranta.
It is emphatically stated that Germany will support £ny Austrian or Italian action. 'Correspondents state .that -Italy' having ' interests in Albania equalling those of Austria, cannot afford to let Austria act alone. Italy is striving to keep all . "the Towers in line, with a view to thi» adoption of forcible steps, but the newspapers emphasise that if Austria acts alone it is not necessary to involve a breakup of the coneert, still less to , precipitate a European .war. It is reported that M. Popovitch, the plenipotentiary in London, 1 .has 'been instructed to make overtures for .a iriendly settlement. i
