The Royal Geographical Society celebrated the 400 th anniversary of Vasco 'de"' Balboa's discovery of the Pacific Ocean. Vasco de Balboa (1475-1517), a Spanish discoverer, was born at Xeres. He accompanied Rodrigo .de Bastides in his voyage of discovery to the western seas (1501). In 1513 he discovered the Pacific and took possession of it in the name of Spain. Jealousy on the part of his enemy Pedrarias Davila (whose daughter he had married) led to his execution.
