CHINA.

THE MONGOLIAN FAITH.

By Cable—Press Association—Copyright.

London, April 27. Bisliop Montgomery, secretary of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, interviewed, referred to the marble Altar of Heaven at Pekin, which had been used for centuries on one day of the year by the Emperor, who stood on the steps and prayed for the people. The tablet behind the altar was inscribed, "The Father of Heaven," and represented the primitive faith of the Mongolians in one God, .which faith was older than Confucius. China would be unprecedentthrilled if the Government and Minister to-day prayed to the Father of Heaven in the immemorial manner. Prayers for China in the churches of all denominations iu Britain, including the Roman Catholic, were very general to-day. A MESSAGE ( OF THANKS. London., April 27. Yuan-Shi-Kai has telegraphed .to the London Missionary Society thanking the Society for its kindly act, adding: :'*l pray for the prosperity, of your religion.. AH'the Chinese people are .grateful.'' The hanks will advance to China £500,000 immediately, and practically finance the country afterwards.
