THE POLICE FORCE.

Over fifty members of the police force met Commissioner Cullen and placed before him certain grievances, which were recorded by a Hansard reporter and will be placed before the Minister of Justice. In a formal statement members of the force submitted that the minimum wage should be !)s a day, increasing to 9s 6d at the end of the first year's service, married men an extra 2s (id a day house allowance in the centres and 2s a day elsewhere. That as they are debarred from travelling at excursion times they be granted free railway passes or some concession. That any policeman charged with any breach should have an appeal board to go to. That from midnight to 2 a.m. beats bo worked by each man alternately, relieved one half-hour to partake of a meal. The Commissioner intimated that the complaints would be presented in the proper quarter, Some of the grievances brought before him he could promise immediate attention to. With regard to the complaint of inadequate rates of pay, he could promise nothing. The question was one of pounds, shillings, and pence, and the existing financial stringency had a bearing on this as on everv other matter of Government expenditure. If men were not satisfied they were at liberty to resign and he would be prepared to accept their icsig nation.
