GOLF

I There was a large gathering of golfers ] and visitors oil the Stratford links yesterday, when the season was officially , ripened in lovely weather. The course was in excellent order, a result secured Jiv the co-operation of the caretaker (Mr. Scott) and the excellent weather of late» Mr. A. W. Budge, the president, in opening the season, welcomed the visitors and expressed pleasure at the large attendance of golfers, which augured well j for a successful season. Mr. Budge then "drove" a ball from the first tee amidst applause, and a mixed foursome was commenced. Twenty pairs started, and all handed in cards, the best being Mrs. Youngs and «T. H. Thompson 4G —12—34, Mrs. Rennell and J. R. L. Stanford 39 Miss O'Brien and I'. N. Fussell 40—4—3(1, Mrs. Budge and 11. E. Abraham 41—4—37, Mrs. Abraham and R. Spenee 46 —4—40, Mrs. Copping and S. Spence 48—8—40, Miss Bayly and C. H. Croker 48—S—40. Mrs. Budge presented the trophies and dispensed afternoon tea in lavish style, and this was heartily appreciated. Mr. A. H. O'Lcary, manager of the Egmont Clothing Qompany, is at present in Wellington making arrangements' for the supply of a large order of uniforms for the Stratford District High School pupils—the boys, of course.
