THE MIX A FATALITY,

Per Press Association. Christchurch; Last-Night, , The inquest' touching the death of John Popplewell, junior, porter, who was run over by a train at Mina on Satur-' day last, was resumed to-day before Mr. 11. W. Bishop, S.M. The inquiry had ! been adjourned to enable evidence to be ! '•ailed as to the manner of the accident. William Henry MoLeuaghan, a shunter in the employ' of the New Zealand Railways, said that he had been on duty at Mina with deceased at the time of the accident. The engine went into a siding to do some shunting. The guard and witness did the shunting, in which deceased took no part at all. They finished shunting and coupled on, and the guard went back to his van. Popplewell got into an L waggon, and witness stepped on to the brake of the stock waggon and gave t)ie order to pull out. The engine pulled out, and while doing so deceased got out of the ' waggon and stood on the brake, and losing his balance fell betwpen the trucks and two stock waggons passed over him. It was I one of those unfortunate accidents that might happen to any experienced shunter. Sergeant Jackson said that the stationmaster at Mina had made a statement to the effect that the deceased was never instructed to do any shunting. Sir. Bishop said that the lirst point was whether a lad of 17 years, unexperienced and only live months in the service, would Iw instructed to carry out such duties. "We have cleared that up." lie said. A verdict of accidental, death was' returned.

A DETERMINED SUICIDE.

Thomas George Glasgow, single, aged 59, committed suicide this morning l by shooting himself through the mouth with a shot gun. List night he came home intoxicated. His relatives remonstrated this morning, (llasgow said it would not occur again and went to the stable and blew a hole in his head.

This afternoon a married woman named Marv Ann Micewan. aged 30, committed suicide by drinking lysol.

THE TALISMAN FATALITY,

Waihi. Wednesday

Evidence in connection with the coroners inquiry into the Talisman mine fatality at Karamialiike on March 28 last, by which Mcßride and llvde were killed, was concluded last night. The verdict was that de-ttli was accidentally caused through the breaking of a wire rope which had become deteriorated, but the evidence was not sufficient to show negligence. A rider wnx added th.it the ropes should lie tested every three imonths.

A fatal aocident took place at 'thii railway crossing here at noon to-day. As the Auckland train was crossing Camden strpet, an old lady, ill's. Orice, who was walking over the lino, was struck by the side of the engine, knocked down, and instantaneously killed. The usual warning was given by the engine-driver, and how the lady ejuue to walk into the engine cannot be explained. She leaves a family of grown-up children.
