AERIAL NAVIGATION.

A BALLOON ACCIDENT,

The occupants of the balloon which met with an accident yesterday were seen in difficulties at Fontevrault-sous-bois. Apparently they allowed overmuch gas to escape, and struck a housetop. A storm of hail and rain then swept the balloon five miles, drifting against houses and telegraph posts. Finally it collapsed, and live men were killed.

DOVER TO COLOGNE,

London, April 18.

Hamel, who made a flight, with a passenger from Dover to Cologne (Germany), estimates that he Jlew 340 miles. Severe storms in Belgium compelled him to rise to a great height; he was driven north-east, and traversed live countries. His aeroplane carried 17801b.

Sections of a new airship from the Astra works, in France, are being erected at Farnborough. It will be 300 horsepower and of 350,000 cubic feet capacity. The Imperial Air Fleet Committee have offered Hansel's monoplane to New Zealand, which has accepted it as the first unit in an Imperial air fleet. The newspaper Standard has inaugurated a public subscription towards the scheme. Mr. William Coward has subscribed £2OO and guaranteed £OOO. Sir Joseph Ward and Lord Desborough have made generous subscriptions.
