TERRITORIALS IN CAMP.
DRUNKEN ROYSTERING. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dannevirke, Wednesday. Abount a hundred Territorials from the Oringi camp visited Dannevirke last night, on leave. The impression they created was a very unfavorable one. They were some of the men who failed to attend the stipulated number of drills during the year, and are putting in four days extra drill. Their conduct in the streets early in the evening was disgraceful. Shops were invaded in search of cigarettes, and uniformed youths paraded the streets as noisily as drunken roysterers. Women and girls were the objects of coarse remarks, and the pandemonium caused was heard half a mile away. Two "terriers," eating raw smoked fish, invaded an hotel and asked for brandies and sodas, but were refused. Going back to camp by the 8.30 train disgraceful proceedings took place. Several carriage windows were broken. Many youths were under the influence of drink.
"The conduct," sad a guard, "was worse than a Maori's at a tangi. I shouldn't have liked to have had the mess to clean up." One civilian was of opinion that the men should be put in a barb wire enclosure and taught civility and manners before soldiering, if they are going to act as they did last night. Many arrests, it is reported, were made when the men returned to camp.
