AUCKLAND MILK SUPPLY.
A SERIOUS SHORTAGE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Tuesday. The shortage in the supply of milk has now become so very acute that the outlook for the coming winter is very serious. In conversation with a representative of one of the larger milk supplying Arms of Auckland, a reporter was informed that the position of the milk supply is now the worst known for the last 30 years, due to the lack of rain. Although there has been an occasional wet day still practically no heavy rain has fallen in the Auckland district since last September. Rain set in to-day, but coming as it does from the south-west, it will not be of very great benefit, as the nights are now too cold to permit of the pasture growing enough to provide much 'feed for the coming winter, and the effect on the cows will be equally bad, as the cold nights must decrease the supply of milk. It would be possible even now to bring in milk from further awav were it not for the fact that under the law it can only be supplied in town from duly registered dairies, and farmers who do not send in milk all the yenr are not willing to go to the expense entailed'in the way of concrete floors and «ther things specified to complete the requirements under the Act for the short time their'milk would be required. It 13 estimated that at the present time the shortage of milk is about 1500 gallons per day. This means a loss of fully foO per day to farmers who regularly supply dairies in the city. ° ,
