New Zealand this evening presented a fine spectacle, the hull, masts, etc., being ell'ectivelv outlined with electric lights, which reflected on the still surface of the water and made up, a pretty picture that attracted much attention from the shore. During the afternoon the warship was visited by large numbers of people. To-night the officers are being entertained at a citizens' ball in the Town Hall, which is lavishly decorated for the occasion, and the function is one of the most brilliant ever held in Wellington. To-morrow the crew will be the guests of the city at lunch, and in the afternoon a fete will be held in Newtown Park. THE MISSING""SALUTE. Wellington, Last Night. 'Referring to a paragraph in a telegraphed report of the proceedings at the arrival of H.M.S. New Zealand, touching the absence of a salute from the forts, the Prime Minister pointed out to-day that the King's regulations and the New Zealand general regulations stated distinctly that His Majesty's ships and His Majesty's forts shall not exchange salutes in any part of His Majesty's Dominions. This explanation was' made, as the paragraph referred to appeared to reflect on the Defence authorities and the Government.
