HEAVY WEATHER.

Auck'and, Saturday.^ Tlie steamers llakura and Macedonia arrived from Sydney early this morning, both liaving been considerably delayed by a cyclone encountered in the early part of the voyage. The Macedonia was swept by two enormous seas which enveloped the vessel, carrying away the cranes and doing other damage. Most of the mail matter which was destroyed by fire in the Maknra's mail room consisted of newspapers for all ports of Xew Zealand, twenty hags being destroyed. Other bags damaged by water were dried ii> the engine-room, and the contents, will be sorted at Auckland, and distributed later. It will be weeks in some cases, and months in others, befor.- the senders of the destroyed letter* and papers can know the extent of their loss. The Macedonia arrived at daylight. She left Sydney on Monday night ill squally weather with .ieavy "seas. She entered the cyclone, which was moving south-east, and was liove-to on Monday night. She resumed her journey at *5 a.m. 011 Tuesday. She was hov'e-to at mid-day, and a heavy sea came aboard while the vessel was in the trough of the sea, and then a i>reat wave came over the how and swept the whole '' vessel and the captain's bridge. It sent the stern under watar and broke the stern telegraph, bent two electric cranes like lead piping, broke the hurricane , fleck, and did minor damage. No person was injured.
