SEVERE EARTHQUAKE.

GENERAL SEISMIC DISTURBANCE. A NATIVE .KILLED. Per Press Association. Masterton, Saturday. One of the mo-t vio'ent earthquakes ever experience in the district, occurred at ten minutes past eeven to-night. A small shake was first *elt, and was followed bv a very sevre shock, which lasted nearly thirty seconds. _ People were panic-stricken and rushed into the street. Buildings swayed to and fro, and things were thrown into confusion. A good deal of damage has been done. A piece of plaster felt from the tower of the post office, and struck a native named Hoani Tawhero, killing him instantly. Deceased was eighteen years of age. Other damages, consisted chiefly of broken crockery. Wanganui, Last Night. A severe and prolonged earthquake was felt here about 7.10 on Saturday evening. No damage is reported. Napier, Last Night. . A slight earthquake was felt here at 7.10 last night. Foxto'i, Last Night. One of the severest earthquakes felt here for some years occurred at 7.1G last night. No scrionO damage is recorded. Masterton, Last Night. The earthquake last .Wening caused a good deal of damage to chimneys in tho town, and was severely felt in the surrounding districts. In Gladstone many chimneys were brought down, and crockery was smashed. At Carterton, as in Masterton, the people were, alarmed and jj rushed into the streets. The duration of the shake was between 20 and 30 seconds. Another shock was experienced at four minutes past t:irec this after* ' noon. ; Wellington, Last Night. ' At 7.10 last night two violent earth* * quakes shook Wellington. The direction appeared to be east to west. No damage is reported. Palmerston-North, Last -Night. A heavy and prolonged shock of earthquake was felt here on Saturday evening at 7.11, the heaviest for some years. Ko damage is reported. A slight shock of earthquake was experienced in New Plymouth at about 3.15 yesterday afternoon. ;
