EXTENSIVE ALTERATIONS. The Telegraph Department lias arranged for extensive alterations to the local telephone lines, whieli may be put in hand at once. Reporting to the New Plymouth Borough Council the Borough Electrical Engineer (Mr. 11. Black) states that on this account before the tramway lines are erected the whole system nf electric light wiring in Devon street, and possibly other parts of the line of route, should be reorganised. Touching on the proposals, he states: ''The present telegraph proposals are to lny telephone cables underground from the Post Office, probably along I'owderhani and Courtenay streets, taking oil a branch cable at each cross street underground into Devon street, then up on to poles along the street to subscribers. It will be (o the advantage of the Department that no service wires cross the street, therefore. I believe there will bo 110 dilliculty in arranging this matter to suit, all parties concerned, and the Department, will no doubt meet the Council in the matter of cost." Mr. Tilack points out that span wire suspension is proposed for tile tramway trolley wire, and this will require poles 011 each side of the street spaced, approximately. one and a half chains apart. TTe advises that these poles be of sufficient length to carry both lighting and telephone wires above the tramwav wires, one on es'ch side of the street. He has communicated with Mr. Parry. the electrical engineer to the Public Works Department, with regard to the duplication of the transmission line, and be (Mr Parry) proposes to visit New Plymouth and inspect the route on an early date.
