] THE TARIFF BILL. THE HEAT INDUSTRY. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Washington, Aoril 10. The free meat proposals in the Tariff Bill are opposed by the packers as against their interests. Tariff supporters urge that the Argentine Republic and New Zealand will be able to supply the United States, thus reducing the price. Opponents of the tariff urge that the meat interests will still control the situation, owing to the prominent position they have already secured in the Argentine trade. WOOL AND SUGAR. THREATENED SECESSION. Received 11, !).50 p.m. Washington. April 11. It is definitely understood that the Senate will accept President Wilson's recommendations that wool and sugar shall carry 1 per cent. duty, with a right to other schedules as they think fit. The work of amendment has already started. Several State delegations are visiting the Capitol, urging the retention of a small duty on wool. A considerable number of Senate Democrats are backing the delegations' demands, but the Presidential recommendations are likely to be carried. Honolulu, April 11.
A petition is being circulated threatening the secession of Hawaii from the American Union if free sugar is adopted by the Congress. THE UNITED STATES NAVY. Washington, April 10. Mr. Franklin, Assistant-Secretary of the navy under Mr. Roosevelt, announced to a navy meeting that the Clovernment bad determined to provide a large and efficient navy for the United States, but that the details were not settled.
