He began his career as professor of law, and in 1870 was elected deputy for Toulouse. He sat in the Left Centre, and was one of the 363 .of the 16th May, 1877. Re-elect-ed in October, :1877, .he joined M. Frcycinet as Minister of the Interior in May, 188Q, .holding this portfolio until November I4th, 'lBBl. (On 22nd, 1889, he again assumed the same office in the Tirard Citbinet. !He became prominent as a stailwart opponent l of the Boulangist 'party,(ConatltutiHg the Senate a High Court of Justice, and taking police measures against the Ligue des Patriotes. He resigned on March Ist, 1890, but his resignation involved the fall of the Cab'net. and'lie resumed his portfolio in the Freyc'inet Cabinet on "March 17th. On December 29tli, 1889, 'he had been elected -Senator of the Department of the Haute-Garonne. Tie was violently attacked by the press and the Boulangist deputies. but did not resign until the ■vliole Cabinet withdrew, on February 'fitli. 1892. Tn December, "1898, he was appointed Ambassador at Constantinople.

The funeral will take place at New Plymouth to-morrow (Saturday).
