FIRE ON A LINER.
MAILS AND CARGO DAMAGED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Wednesday. The Secretary of the General Post Office has received word from the General Manager of the Union Company that the Sydney manager cabled fit) noon yesterday that he had received a wireless message from the Captain of the Makura bound from Sydney to Auckland as follows:—"At 7.10 p.m. it was found that the mail room on the port side of No. 2 hold Was on fire. A south-east gale was blowing, but the fire was extinguished at 7.30 p.m. The mails and cargo were considerably damaged by fire and water." The .captain added that he would wire further particulars. FURTHER PARTICULARS. Wellington. Last Night. The Secretary of the Post Office has received the following telegram from the Union Company, Dunedin:— "Referring to our telegram yesterday, Svdney has i just cabled us that a further message has been received from the captain of the Makura**t eight o'clock last night, some 240 miles from Sydney, as follows: —"We are in very heavy weather. Fifty hags of New Zealand mails have been damaged by fire and'water, som* being totally ■destroyed." --- ' ' v
