The '-Herald," commenting on the reciprocity- proposals, says it is a little unfortunate thsit the confer"nc" is brim? held during the Federal election campaign. This will inevitably make the deliberations of the conference loom less large in the public eye that their importance warrants. This is a pity, for if Australia aspires to be a nation in fact as well as name sh-r> should give move thought to external relations. Our commercial" relations with New Zealand are anomalous. We allow Britain preference on certain imports while we confront New Zealand with the same tariff wall as Germany and Japan. As far as sentiment is concerned New Zealand has ef|ual claims with Britain and as far as propinquity goes has greater claims. The "Herald" points out the advantages of reciprocity in certain products, and urges the importance and necessity of reciprocal action in defence matters.
