I CHARGES 01-' THEFT. (From our own correspondent.) ! At the Waitara Police Court on Tuesi day, before Messrs. Newbery and J. Ratj tenbury, J.P.'s, William Duncan, alias j William Erawatu was charged, on the: i information of the police, with stealing one gold ring, value £2O, the property of G. M. S. Thompson, and also a waistcoat and gold watch chain valued at fl Gs. Od. Sergeant Haddrel! prosecuted. G. M. S. Thompson, an engineer, at present in Waitara, deposed that he was residing at. the Clifton Boarding House, on 3\iarch 20. The ring produced was his propertv. Tie left it in a box within a drawer in bis bedroom, where he saw it at about 10 o'clock m\ tbe date mentioned. He missed the ring the same afternoon, and reported the matter to Constable Lapouple that night. He was taken to the cell by the constable, where he saw accused, who was searched and the ring found loose in (lie inside pocket of prisoner's coa,t. , Prior to beinir searched, prisoner denied having any stolen property, in his possession. William Stewart, a. draper, a bo-.irdcr at (j'lift'on House, deposed that from infornjation received from Constable La'pbujUe, he went to' the police station for the purpose of ascertaining if any of his property was there and found a waistcoat and-watch chain (produced) there.
