AWAKINO COUNTY COUNCIL.
THE FIRST MEETING. The first meeting of the newly-consti-tuted Awakino County Council was held at Awakino on Saturday, March 22 last, the day appointed by the Governor-in-Council, when there were present : Messrs H. H. Thorns, J. Patterson, W. ¥. Kelly, R. Body, J. Old and C. Leech.
The returning officer and acting-clerk, Mr. J. B. Carr, took the chair, pro tcm, and having read the official declaration, called upon the councillors to elect one of their number as chairman.
It was proposed by Mr. Kelly, and seconded by Mr. Patterson, that' Mr. C. Leech be elected chairman. It was proposal as an amendment by Mr. Thorns, and seconded by Mr. Old, that Mr. Boddv be elected chairman. As tho votimr was equal, it was decided to settle the question by spinning a coin, and this going in Mr. Leech's favor, he was duly elected.
Proposed that the general rate be struck at a halfpenny in the £ on the unimproved value.—Carried.
The chairman reported that the Government intended to erect a steam punt over the Mokau river, in place of the present vessel, and, on Mr. Leech's motion, seconded by Mr. Kelly, it was resolved—
"That this Council urges its emphatic ami unanimous opinion that tin 1 erection of a steam punt as a means of crossing the Moknu river is not in the l»c«st interests of tlie district, ami respectfully requests that acceptance of the tenders he deferred until the settlers have the opportunity of expressing an opinion on the question." A copy of the resolution is to he sent to the various) county councils and to the Taranaki members of ■Parliament, also to the Minister of rublie Works.
Proposed that the headquarters of (he county be at Awakino. As an amendment. proposed that the hearquarters be at Waltangiirn. A proposal by Mr. Patterson that the headquarters he at Marakopa lapsed for want of a seconder. The amendment that the headquarters be at Waitanguru was then put to the meeting and declared carried.
Proposed that a Herlc be advertised for at a salary of :G7O per annum, and a bonus of one per centum on the rate collected. Proposed as an amendment, that applications be called for a clerk, applicants to state salary required.—The amendment was carried. Tt was resolved tlwt the meetings he held on Saturdays, on the <!•;y of ov immediately preceding the full rmnn. at 11 a.m.
Tt was resolved to open a bank-in? account at the I!a.nk of New Zealand. Te Kuiti, and that, the manager be waited upon respect inn' an overdraft.
Mr. llowarth. of the lirm of Marl. Kent and TTowarth. Te Kuiti. was appointed solicitor to the county. It was resolved that Mr. Trincar be appointed clerk for the next meeting of the Council, and the matter of despatehiutf the letters re the Mokau punt was left, in Mr. Trinear's hands.—Waitara Mail.
