FOOTBALL.
TAKAXAKI lU'Ci'.Y I'XiOX. AXXTAL.MEXTIXG. Tlie iinnual meeting of tlie Taranaki I'ugby L liion was held at Stratford on Friday uight, when there were present: .Messrs F. C. .1. ISellringer, president (in tlie chair), T. liacliaiian and D. (Jeorge (Clifton), I'. Masters and E. Jackson (Stratford), .las. MeLcod (Tukapa), (j. lJertrand and C.F. Sadler (Star), Ford and Xarliey (Fltham). l)e Launay and Nicliolls (Inglewood), L'. O'Dea and Atkinson (Ilawera). A. Lees and J. Crowley (Okaiawa), !•'. Spurdle (Referees' Association), ]). Web-tor (Rovers), Jna. (jarc-ia (Okato), J. S. McKay and W. (Jlenn (Waimate). 1). Malone (treasurer) and P. Skoghind (secretary). Opnnake. I'atea and Fit/.roy were not represented.
ill'. I'nchanan referred to tlie general meeting which was to have been called at the end of tire season, but which lapsed. Tiie chairman was of opinion that sueh a meeting was do-irable. ft was, he added, a matter of congratulation for the referees (hat there was so little rough play. Regarding school football—a matter which had been before the Union on may occasions—he hoped the Tinion would deal witlj this matter, as the encouragement of school football was a matter of great importance. He extended congratulations to tlie Waimate Clnb on again coming out 011 top. Til presenting the report and balancesheet, the chairman stated that judging bv the interest taken in various centres there was every evidence that football was still going to lie pre-eminent. He briefly passed over the Saturday halfholiday and A. and 13. representative matches and then formally moved the adoption of the report.
In seconding this, Mr. McLeod (chairman of the management committee) stated tliat the balance-sheet was a disappointment. It was honed that a profit of t2(l(l would have been made, but owing to the wet. season —oniv one fine day being experienced for a representative matcii—tliey were lucky to come out square at all. He pointed out the extra expense entailed by some players having to come to matches in motor cars. In former times their places would have had to lie taken by inferior players, so the committee could not eavill at this. It cost €l2O for travelling expenses of their own players at local matches. I'rospeets looked good for the present year, but there was nothing to ,- crow" about from a moneymaking point of view. Still, the Union was not out to make money. Referring to the Saturday half-holiday, be pointed out that while this was a debatable question, everyone agreed that until there was a universal balf-holidav football would not flourish as it should. Tillies had to be suspended last year to meet the exigencies created by the failure of Inglewood and Eltham seniors, and if the Saturday half-holiday came into force, it would again be necessary to reorganise, but this would be met in a reasonable and logical .way, lie suggested, too, that a honorary members' association should be opened, for old representatives. Two players in Tlawera liad promised him subscriptions to this. This would keep old representatives close in touch. Reverting to school football, he suggested that, the various clubs should take in hand the schools in their district until siicb time as the Union funds would permit the Union to_come into direct eontaet wlliriWiiiL'^ Mr. liuchanan (Clifton) yiticised .Jt|je. balance-sheet at it was not <iuite fair_tbat there should be a'comparison of profits, as last year the Taranaki team did the biggest tour ever undertaken by the province. In regard to the position of Inglewood and Eltbaui, he thought the . management comniiltee should have called a meeting of delegates to decide the matter. So far as referees were concerned better care should b-> exercised. On two occasions no referee was appointed for Clifton matches whils'. at a.play-ofi' two referees wore s: nt, one by fie Union and one bv the Association. The provincial matches were expensive and cost <>7% per cnl. of (he takings, the a vera g' 1 from in'. < rprovinci-il bein^r ids, wiiilsi p!:"'-oii' matches netted £l;i. lie tliotrdil in Ihe accounts" the d;bit balance alone should lu> shown instead of ;i debit and credit. He also drew attention to ihe )' tot that the Clifton Club had hern asked to travel from home on three occa-i-nn- in one week; and lie -hoped for better arrangements in future.
