MR. HOGG'S PROTEST. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Wellington Education Board this afternoon adopted a recommendation approving the condition suggested by.a circular from the Inspector-General of Schools that free place holders be required to comply with the conditions of the Defence Act. ■Mr. A. W. Hogg said that, while approving of the training of adults to defend the country, he was opposed to militarism in the expensive form introduced in New Zealand, and to interference, with personal liberty. He moved fan amendment, regretting that the Minister of Education should have considered it advisable to menace the education system hy the. enforcement of compulsory service under the Defence Act, and expressed tiie opinion that the people would, when the opportunity came, remove a system which wps becoming an incubus and a burden too. The amendment was seconded pro forma, but only Mr. Hogg voted for it. The Board also adopted a recommendation by its committee "Thar, in cases where the number of free places is less than the number of applicants, priority of opportunity of admission he determined, not by the date of application, but by the results of the inspectors' examination for proficiency certificates, and that the Inspector-General be recommended to amend free plaee regulation 13 accordingly."
