A "MOPPING UP" FAMILY;

By Telegraph—Press Association. ,' ■ Wellington, List flight. " The mutter of land aggregation was. touched upon at to-day's meeting of the Wellington Land Hoard. When nJ application for the lease of a section came up for consideration, the. name of the intended transferee prompted an enquiry of the ranger whether the person * applying was a member of a certain family I 'who, among them, held a very largo acreage of land.

The lunger said lie knew the family, but not the prospective transferee. "If he belongs to tJ IO family of the same n<une y then .1 (lout think he is landless, as he states," said' the ranger. "They have all gut land—the whole family. This* man may or may not he a member of this family, and he may hold land, but not in his own name," "We know that aggregation is goingon," said Mr. Dtuvson. There was no doubt about it, he added. Mr. Georgetli; "We know it is; and apparently the law allows it." Mr. Dawson said it would be possible for him, with a large family, to "mop up" a lot of land. A few sueli families could "mop up" all the' land in the country. The ranger said that if the man belonged to the family referred to, he knew that family had land all over the country. The applicant mijfht not have land in his own name, assuming that he was a member of the family in question. It was decided that the ranaer should make investigations before the Board disposed of the application.
