Among the passengers from Onehunga. by the Rarawa yesterday morning were Messrs. Newton King, 33. C'haney, R. Paul and R. Cock.
At the annual meeting of the Star Football Club last night, a resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. Richards was passed.
A Sydney cable message announces the death of Mr. James Curley, a prominent member of the Labor Party and formerly secretary to the Colliery Employees Federation.
Mr. AY. L. F. Chambers has been appointed honorary secretary to the Opunake Harbor Board, until such time ai the .business of the Board warrants the payment of a salary. Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Bradstock have been appointed master and matron of the Stoke Boys Industrial School, says a Press Association message from Wellington. Mr. Bradstock is at present master at Rongokoko -School, near Ekotalmna.
The following appointments of officers transferred to the Department of Immigration, are Gazetted: Hector Douglas Thompson to be chief clerk, Alfred Montague Adams accountant, Jas. William Coard, Frederick Arthur Ruck and Robert AVilliam Lavery clerks. At the Veterans' banquet last night opportunity was taken by the veterans to present ex-Captain C. T. Mills with a barometer in appreciation of the services he had rendered to them in the past. The presentation was made by Lieutenant Davis, who referred at 'length to the way in which Mr. Mills had striven to keep the Association afloat in the years when it most needed asI sistance. His many kindnesses would : never be forgotten. Mr. Mills briefly responded.
The Dunedin correspondent of the Ashburton Guardian states that it is rumored that Dr. Chappie intends resigning his seat for Stirlingshire in favor of Mr. Robert McNab, who is about to go to the Old Country. It is stated that Dr. Chappie has found British politics to be very expensive, as apart from an election campaign he has had to contribute large sums to the party funds. It is said that up to the present the total cost to him amounts to £7OOO. Dr. Chappie "and Mr. McNab have largo mutual interests in New Zealand, and it is presumed that Dr. Chappie will return to the Dominion to manage them.
