Mr. W. 11. Gaw has sold his interest in the Club Hotel, Waitara, to Mr. Gardiner, of Stratford. A London cablegram states that the funeral of King George of Greece has been fixed for March 30. .
Mr. W. Leatliam, brother of Dr. Leatham, arrived in' New Plymouth by the ttarawa on Saturday morning.
Dr, Maguire, for some time temporarily in charge of the Auckland Hospital, hiis been selected as the new superintendent.
The Trade Commissioners left for Australia by the Maheno last night to 'Continue the sittings in the Commonwealth. Colonel R. J. Collins (Controller and Auditor-General) and Mrs. Collins are spending a few days with Mrs. J. Vt. Foreman, of Tikorangi. The deatli is reported of Mr W. Ayerst Ingrain, a well-known English artist, some of whose works are to be seen in Australian and the Dunedin art galleries. G. S. Porter, tlie oldest printer in the world, who on Tuesday last celebrated his 100 th birthday, died yesterday at his residence in Pliillipstown.—Press Association. Mr. F. E. A. Gordon, against whom a verdict was given in the libel action Cordon v. New Zealand Times, was passenger by the Ulimaroa for Sydney on Thursday. 1 Mr. W. B. Scandrett, Mayor of Invercargill, was last night entertained at a banquet, at which a presentation was made him in honor of his goldeu wedding. —Press Association. Mr. Ceo. Coghill, the new manager of the New Plymouth branch of the Union Bank of Australia, arrived last evening. A London cablegram announces the death of Sir Frederick Carrington.
It is understood that 3fr. M. C. Keane, associate editor of the Dominion, has accepted a similar position on the Christelvurch Press. Mr. Graham takes over the editorial reins of the latter paper. Mr. B. Nelson Burns, who has been for some time in the Native Department, and is at present in charge of a native school near Mongonui, North Auckland, has been appointed principal of the Native Training College at Tonga.
Dr. Moncrieff Finlayson, a son of the Rev. A. M. Finlayson, of Waitati, who for the past three years has been engaged in explorations for petroleum in Burma, lias accepted a two years' offer as chief geologist and adviser to one of the leading producing companies in that country.
Regarding the late Mrs. Mannering, wife of Mr. Guy Mannering. manager of the Xapier 'branch of the Union Bank, who was drowned whilst fishing in the TTaikato river at Taupo last week, the Xapier Telegraph says: "The late-Mrs. Mannering accompanied her husband on a fishing holiday to the thermal regions, and they had been there about a week. She was a daughter of Colonel Lane, of Christchurch, and was highly esteemed by all who knew her. | She shared her husband's keenness for' mountaineering, and had accompanied him on many of his climbs on the Southern Alps. The deepest sympathy will go out to the bereaved husband and his son and daughter." The Hastings correspondent of the same paper writes: "The news of Mrs. O. 15. Mannering's death, by drowning in the Waikato river, came, in the nature of a shock, and was received in Hastings with profound sorrow. The deceased lady resided here (luring the time that her husband was manager of the local branch of the Union Rank, and she was held in affectionate regard. Whilst in Hastings she identified herself intimately with music. "During the time she lived here music, both vocal and instrumental, owed much to her efforts, but her energies were not confined to the arts, because she was also an ardent sportswoman and, with her husband, climbed mountain peaks which would have daunted many men, whilst she was an enthusiastic fisherwoman."
