LAWN TENNIS
f It is unfortunate tliat it was deemed necessary to abandon the North Island inter-provincial tournament at New Plymouth (writes the Auckland Herald). When in Auckland recently Dickie and Wallace expressed the opinion that if Auckland were the only Association to send a team that they would rather have the opportunity of going to an open tournament than spend their holidays in New Plymouth for the sake of only one day's match against Auckland. Although the idea of holding an annual interprovincial tournament was undoubtedly a good one, nevertheless it must be admitted that the scheme has not caught on. Why it lias not is something of a conundrum, but the fact remains that players seem to prefer to attend some open tournament in preference. It may be that the governing bodies are responsible in making no effort to make ths idea a success." Of at least one association this may be said with a good deal of truth. It will not be surprising if the last lias been heard of the interprovincial scheme. It is a great pity, for the scheme was worthy of far more consideration than it has received in general.
The Cannes (Bean Site) tournament served to bring the form of Mile. Broquedis, the Vrench lady champion, into creator prominence. She encountered Mrs. 1). R. Larcombe, the champion of England, in the final. and it was only a strenuons encounter that Albion's representative won the sets resulting in her favor, li-4, « —B, 7—5. Mile. Broqncdis is not only particularly attractive in appearance but her strokes are the delight of all beholders.
