A DISASTROUS HALE. By Cable—Tress Association—Copyright. Received IS. 0..m p.m. Suva, March 18. Yesterday barometrical readings indicated a climatic disturbance. This morning at live o'clock the glass fell steadily. At seven the fiovernment signal guns boomed a warning of an approacliintr hurricane. At nine a gale was blowing with full force, finally dying away at eleven o'clock. The soup works were totallv destroyed, and the Union Companv's unfinished hotel was damaged to the extent of £SOO. Other local damage was light. Communication with
other centres is inferrunted. The Rewa Valley sugar-cane and banana crops were devastated for miles. The Labasa and Taviuni are safe, and the Tofua rode the gale in the harbor. The Marama. having sheltered, reached port safely. The Tofua lias left for Auckland, and the Marama for Vancouver.
