TEACHERS' INSTITUTE.
GENERAL MEETING. A general meeting of the Taranaki Teachers' Institute was held on Saturday. , The Education Department wrote enclosing conditions under which teachers not in the Superannuation Fund may now join up to June 30 next. It was resolved to ask the inspectors to arrange for holding the proficiency examinations as near the same time as possible and at the end of the year, and that pupils' marks be entered on the schedules. •Mr. A. Gray, Director of Technical Education, is to be asked to'address the teachers on agriculture with a view to uniformity in the method of treating that subject. The amendments to the new regulations for teachers' certificates proposed by Otago, gave use to some discussion. The Institute approved of only clauses d.. p.. and j. Another clause was added, '•That compulsory attendance at first aid be not rei|iiirod. nor a course of practical work in the sciences for the D. certificate, as the latter practically prevents teachers who cannot attend a university i from obtaining a certificate."
Tlip proposed scale of shift's and salaries drawn up by tlie executive of the New Zealand Educational Institute was then considered. Mr. E. Thomas proposed tiiat another grade of schools he added between grades T. and If., with an attendance of (»4. This was lost, and the proposed scale received the hearty approval of the Institute. The. secretary reported that no request from individual schools for alteration of holidays would bo considered, utiles? received in time to be dealt with at a liieefiii!* of the "Board. Miss' Hutchison and Mir. Cuthbert were elected members of the Institute.
