Mr. Joseph McCluggage. of Stratford, is on a visit to Napier and Hastings. Rev. Met'ully, of Turaldna, is on a health-recruiting visit to New Plymouth.

Mr. M. J. Macßeynolds has .been appointed first chairman of the Opunake Harbor Board. '' • ~

Mr. J. Liddel Kelly, the well-known journalist, and his wife are on a visit to New Plymouth.

Rev. T. G. Hammond, Wesleyan Maori Missioner, is visiting his dusky flock around New Plymouth. Mr. R. Lambie, senr., of Pihama, has been nominated by the Government as its appointee to the new Opunake Harbor Board.

Mr. MeMahon, one of the newly-ap-pointed stipendiary stewards, was present to watch the racing at the Opunake meeting yesterday. The death has taken place suddenly of the Right Rev. and Hon. Augustus Lcgge, D.D., Bishop of Lichfield, who succeeded Bishop Selwyn in 1891.

The death occurred in New Plymouth on Saturday of Miss Ellen Barry, youngest daughter of the late John Barry, of Xormanby. The interment took place yesterday.

It is reported in Blenheim that the Hon. F. M. B. Fisher contemplates opposing Mr. McCallum, the sitting member for that district, at the next general election.

A Boston cablegram reports that Mr. Richard Gluey, formerly Attorney-Gen-eral and Secretary of State in the Cabinet of President ..Cleveland, has been offered the position of American Ambassador in London, but declined it without giving any reason.

\ cablegram announces the death of William Halo White, who is .better known perhaps by his pseudonym of Mark Rutherford. Deceased was at one time assistant-director of contracts at the Admiralty, and wrote several books, ,the best known of which are, "The Autobiography of Mark and "The Revolution in Tanner's Lane."

It is reported in London that the King may shortly confer dukedoms on Prince Arthur of Connaught, cousin to his Majestv, and on Prince Alexander of Teck, brother of Queen Mary. These two popular princes would/then take their seats in the House of Lords as peers of the realm. There are many titles associated in times past with cadet branches of the Royal Family. Among these titles, which are now in abeyance, may be mentioned the dukedom of Kent. Sussex and Cambridge. The careers of the two small princes are in many respects similar. Both are identified with the Armv. Both began their service in the 7th Hussars. Both have acted as "nnder-studv" to the King, but Prince Arthur has been selected more frequently and for the most important occasions.
