In the House of Commons there was a debate on the effect of the closure. i The Prime Minister (Mr. Asquith) contended that the large electorates were taking a quickened and continuous interest in the debates in the House, and were demanding stricter adherence to party allegiance. He added that it might be desirable to use the grand committee for controversial measures. He favored a committee being set up to examine the House of Commons' rule of procedure. Mr. Bonar Law (Leader of the Opposition)' argued that owing to the tightness of party discipline' the country was no longer interested ill the proceedings of Parliament. THE ADDRESS-IX-REPLY. London, March 14. The Address-in-Keply was agreed to.
