llichanl Eager ami Samuel Jarvis were charged at tl'u- Magistrate's Court today with keeping a common gaminghouse, and eight others with being found on tln> premise*. Two detectives were subjected to a vigorous cross-examina-tion bv counsel for the defence. One admitted that he had no search warrant and no right to take away a pack of cards found there. Counsel also objected to the alleged collaboration by detectives in the preparation of their notes The. Magistrate, dismissed tin: charges against the defendants, who admittedly were not found on the premises, but were, stopped after they had left the house, and reserved judgment in the cases of Eager and Jarvis. OUtt DREADNOUGHT. Christchurch, Last Xight. In connection with the visit of 11.M.5. Xew Zealand, the Government lias appointed llr. P.. M. Wilson, of the. De-. partment of Tourist and Health Resorts, to make the necessary local arrangements at the ports to be visited. The Government also intend using the Tutanekai for the purpose of conveying sehool children and others to the warship in ports where the ship is unable to berth alongside the wharf.
