THE RED PINE.
MAGISTERIAL ENQUIRY OPENED.
By Telegraph —Per Press Association. Nelson, Last Night.
A magisterial ompiivy into the cause, of the wreck of the sWrner Red Pine on Cape Stephens, last Friday night, was opened to-day before Mr. J. S. Evans, S.M., and Captains F. Black and H. McXab, assessors. Captain Edens gave evidence that after leaving Greymouth the weather was line until '7.45 on Friday evening, when a. fog came down, the vessel'then being on a course-which should have carried her to the north of Stephens Island. The fog lifted and the vessel continued full speed until 10.30, when the weather again became thick, and the vessel was put at half speed, with a sharp look-out. When within a ship's length, broken water was seen and the vessel was put full speed astern, but she went on the rocks and sank in a few minutes, the crew only having time to get one boat out. He did not notice any strong set of the tide, but had heard that other vessels in the Straits that night experienced strong tides. The enquiry was adjourned until to-morrow.
