Detective MeLcod, of Christchureh, has been transferred to Gisborne. The Rev. C. H. Isaacson, vicar of St. Peter's, l'ahiatua, has been appointed vicar of the Porirua parish. A Sydney cablegram states that the new Governor. Sir Gerald 'Strickland and Lady Strickland have arrived. They had an enthusiastic welcome. Mr. Allen, says a London message, is returning from Vancouver bv the Makura, and will reach home early in June. Sir George Taverner, late Agent-Gen-eral for Victoria, has been invested with the Order of I>i. Michael and St. George. Mr. E. V. Day is relieving Mr. P. 0. McCord, teller of the local branch of the Union Bank, who is absent on sickleave. Mr. A. Crooke, S.M., is at present spending his annual vacation in the South Island. During his absence Mr. E. Page, S.M., will act in his stead, j Dr. Eamage, who has been ire Waitara for just about three and a half years, has disposed of his practice to Dr. Campbell, of Ilawera, and will shortly be leaving Waitara. Mr. J. P. Luke has definitely decided to contest die Wellington Mayoralty next month. On making his decision known. Messrs. It. A. Wright and W. IT. P. Barber decided to withdraw. This will probably mean a straightout contest between Messrs. Luke and McLaren (says the Dominion}. The death occurred at Gisborne yesterday uioriiiiKj; of Mr. William Richards, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Richards, of Avenue Road. The deceased, who was until a few months ago resident in New Plymouth, was a well-known cricketer, having been an enthusiastic member of the Garrineton Road Club, and much sympathy is felt for his parents in his untimely end Dr. Truby King, superintendent of ScacliiY Mental Hospital, is to leave next month on a visit to England. _ In London he will attend a conference on infant mortality which has been convened by the National Association for the Prevention of Infant Mortality and for the Welfare of Children. The conference, which is to sit on August 4 and ;">, will be attended by representatives from various parts of the English-speaking world. Dr. Truby King will be absent from New Zealand eight or ten months.
