Chia, Viho was lately prominent through his marriage with a wenknown Aiistralia.n girl, called on Hwang, and it is'alleged that after a long argument regarding his private ail'airs, fired two revolver shots without result. lie fired a third as Hwang grappled with him, the bullet passing through Hwang's upper arm and shoulder. The wound is not serious. The Chinese Oovernment, in Sep',ember, -on the recommendation of the Consul, terminated Chin's engagement as secretary of the Consulate. Chia has since been acting as manager of the Eastern Trading Company, and lias held a number of important positions, including the headmastership of the prefecfual training college at Changchow. the professorship of English at Pekin University, the chief secretaryship to Tong.
