ASHOKK AT O.UARAU. A SKRTOUS CONDITION. ]>y Telegraph.—Per Press Association. Oamaru, Last Night. The steamer Kowliai, while leaving Oainaru to-day. ran ashore on the mole, near the head of the breakwater. Dunedin, Last Night. The Kowliai mishap is more serious than supposed. While getting out past tk» mole at 8.30, she appeared to get out of control, and she entered the swirl of waters caused by the meeting of the ebb tide and the heavy incoming sea. She was driven right across thomole, and serious damage was so obvious that she was turned for the harbor. She was leaking in the engineroom, and the (ires went out of! the Pilot Beach, but the captain succeeded in beaching her near the week-end pleasure resort. At 11 a.m. the engine-room was full of water, and there was 18 inches of water over the deck at the stern. The cargo, about 100 tons, was dry, and a hulk was sent out at noon to salvage it.FURTHER PARTICULARS. . Dunedin, Last Night. The steamer Kowliai, which had to be beached this morning as the result of being carried over the mole at the herds, was shifted '..his afternoon, as the incoming tide .-md wind were causing her fore-part to bump on the rocks. She was hauled up to the sandy beach near the Spit jetty, and moored there. A portion of her cargo was discharged into the hulk Emprczc, and a diver went down to ascertain the extent of the damage and place collision mats over the damaged hull. The Kowliai will be pumped out by Suction Dredge 404 to-morrow, and it is hoped to, havr- [ her in dock some time during the day.
