Saturday saw the conclusion of (.he Saturday competition, when United Service defeated Xew Plymouth by ail innings and 10 runs, notching the lirst innings victory of the season in the Saturday .matches here. They were, nearly robbed of this honor, as the last wicket fe!! just as the town clock struck six. New Plymouth went first to the wickets. Bain and Dinniss bowled, both doing well, the former being deadly. He secured tthoppherd, Arden, Mason, "Williams and (ireen for one run, with the total at two for live wickets. The next two wickets added three runs, when [ Xcwell came in and spoilt Bain's average by hitting 12 oil' him in one over and live in the next before Dinniss got one past him. The innings closed for -o. of v.iiicli Xewcll accounted for 17. Bain finished with (he lino average, (if six for 2(!. and Dinniss, who bowled six overs, got four wickets at an average :of one run apiece. United Service, in ' their venture, scored 122, Bain being toji score)' with 27, though he had two or three let oil's from Williams, who was bowling on the ofl' theory. Xew Plymouth's total was eclipsed for the fall of two wickets. Rev. t'olvile l!l, Simpson (not out) 1(5, Extras 12, Perham 10, and Sumner 10, were the principal contributors. Williams and Mason divided the howling honors. Requiring 04 to save an innings defeat.
