THE UNION COMPANY.
THE STRIKE AVERTED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Wellington, Friday. After the conference the following statement was prepared for the press: —■•lt is understood that the engineers had some time ago made demands for increased, P'.iy and other privileges •in line with those enjoyed by engineers in Australia'under a recent award of the Arbitration Court there. The company had already agreed to concede the Australian wages,"but demurred at the payment of overtime, proposing in lieu thereof a Used supplementary monthly payment. Mr. Massey upheld the engineers claims in regard to overtime, and these were, therefore, conceded. The engineers will now work under the Australian award as regards wages and overtime and other privileges, the difference between the conditions in New- Zealand and Austral ia being now of a very minor character. The conference be-tween-the Union Company and the engineers has been of a very friendly nature, and there is every reason to believe that the amicable relationship which has always existed between the company and it's engineers will be undisturbed."
