EXPERT COMMITTEES AT WORK. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Til order to carry out as far as practicable their decision to see every oflicer in the public service before issuing their, first classilication list, the Commissioners will proceed to the South Island. It is officially announced that since the Commissioners assumed office at the beginning of the year the progress of the work undertaken has been greater than was anticipated. An inspection of the department, preparation of regulations under the Act, and preparation and first draft and classification have been proceeded with concurrently. An inspection of various departments by the Commissioners themselves will" occupy the greater portion of the present year, but in order to bring the inspection into a forward state a committee of expert record, clerks has been set up to report 011 tjie system of records in the Government Department, with tiie object of adopting the best system for all branches of the service. A committee of expert accountants from th- public service is now making enquiries with the object of ascertaining whether duplication or overlapping exists. This committee is expected to report about the middle of April. An expert statistician is_ also examining the statistical work of the department, with the object of ascertaining where any improvements can ltf. made. Classification should be ready about June 1.
