STRATFORD NEWS.

1 | From <!'ir Resident Reporter. Ui'.i : Xc.m Loan & Mercantile Agency to. Ti I. 1 li:';lie ILL THE AUCKLAND EXHIBITION A TARAXAKI PROVIXCIAL COURT. X'ew Plymouth, Stratford. Inglewood and Eltham Borough Couneilrs and Chambers of Commerce aud the Taranaki County Council were repicsented yesterday at the meeting of delegates held at Stratford to take into consideration tlio advisability of securing space at the Auckland Exhibition for a Taranaki provincial court. Mr. W. P. Kirkwood, Mayor, of Stratford, presided. A-resolution was passed approving of the scheme to take a space 00ft. x 20ft., and those present formed themselves into a committee tk fully promote the projeet. A financial committee was set up, comprising Messrs. Kirkwood, W. 11. 11. S'oung. Masters, S. JI. James and J. B. Richards (secretary pro tern) to go into the question of financing the scheme and report to a further meeting of delegates. It is proposed that when the matter is well in hand, and the finance arranged, local committees shall be set up in the various towns, with a central executive at Stratford, this town being selected owing to its convenient railway timetable, delegates being able to reach here from north and south, hold a meeting, and return home the same evening. It was stated that the cost of the court would probably be £SOO, of which £l2O would be for space at the rate of 2s per square foot. It was proposed to ask exhibitors in the court to help in defraying the cost, and that the balance be raised by levies by the local bodies, probably £2OO from exhibitors and £3OO from the local bodies, their levy being, say, £3O for every million pounds rateable value. It was stated that the Government intended passing a Short; Act to enable local bodies to make the necessary grants. The meeting recognised that the scheme must be taken up provincial!}* and that without the co-operation of the whole province it could not be a success. ' WILFUL WASTE." THE POOR PROBLEM. Improvidence and poverty are often synonymous terms. Men and women who devote their time to philanthropic and benevolent work frequently find the truth of the old saying that "wilful waste brings woeful.want," and that niueh of the need for charity would be avoided if the recipients had any idea of domestic economy. A ease of this kind was mentioned to the Hospital Board yesterday morning by Mr. Athol Meredith, one of its members. The details were distressing. There was a mother and family of seven children, and the father wiis at present an inipatc of a sanatorium. The family was practically destitute, and the whole of them were at present existing upon the charity of the neighbor*. But there was :v good ili-iil of extravagance, or bad management. Mr. Meredith mentioned that the family had been given the use of a couple of cows, but much of the milk had been fed straightway to the pigs, no attempt being made to make butter or anything of that kind. He recommended that in granting charitable aid the Board should give only what was required, and not give them money to waste. "If we gave them £2 a week they would still be in want," he concluded. The Board decided to allow ten shillings' worth of provisions weekly, thus leaving very little margin for extravagance. THE HORTICULTURAL SHOW. There are excellent entries for the Horticultural Show, to be held to-mor-row and Friday. The weather of late has been very kind to gardeners, and there is no doubt that this year the show will be one of the largest and best yet held. Stratford is very conveniently reached by rail, and people in other towns who are interested in horticulture can spend a very pleasant afternoon, trains reaching here at about three o'clock from north and south, and returning shortly after 6.30 p.m. The committee of the Society has made very complete arrangements for the show, and a big attendance seems assured. The only matter as yet not arranged is in regard to the weather, and it is understood that Secretary Cato has this matter in hand.

STRATFORD HOSPITAL BOARD At the ordinary monthly meeting of the Board yesterday there were present: Messrs. K. Marfell (chairman), J. McAllister. A. Meredith, \Y. Rogers, J. Oh vistolTel and X. TTine. A XI'IiSFS SALARY. ".Mr. McAllister brought up the ques- ( tion 'nf the nurses' salaries. lie thought 1 the si.-ier at the local institution was underpaid, -eeing (hat she had a certain am ..nit of responsibility under the matron. -Mr. McAllister could not see why the man who raked the gardens and cut the grass, or the girl who waxed the (lonrs. should be paid as muel) as or more than a skilled nurse, who was a woman of experience, cap • jie of taking up it better position. T"n 'ss she were paid pri.perlv the Board wjuld have the same old diiliculty of the sister leaving for a 'iiore lucrative post elsewhere. Mr. Iline: [Tow does her Hilary foiu]i n e with the salaries of sisters in other hospitals'; Mr. MeAlli-ler said that ill New Plymouth the sister next to the matron got •can a vear. as against £OO here, while the matron's salarv at eacll place was £IOO. Tn answer to a question, Mr. Penn. the secretary, said this nurse's salary rose in yearly increments of £o to £BO. Mr. McAllister was giving notice to move that the sister's salarv be increased to C7">. but it was pointed out that a motion in this form might raise false hopes, and it was decided to take 1 lie matter into eonsideiation al the April meeting. STRATFORD EASTER GYMKHANA We would draw the attention of our readers to the advertisement in another column announcing a big attraction for

I the holiday on Easter Monday. The Stratford A. & I'. Association Ins | earned an enviable npm.ition for the excellence of their -j>ri 113- show, and what it undertakes to dn dies woil. 1 year it promofed a «ri-H»US;:*.»isi in oid -r to give the public oi' Ti» r;» naki a novel holiday. So successful and popjlar was. the function that the Society proposes to make it an annual fixture. This year a magnificent programme of events has been drawn up, and already many enquiries have been made by those who propose competing. The prize money is on "a liberal scale, ;ind intending competitors are urged to make their entries with the secretary a3 soon as possible. Kntries close on Tuesday, March 18, 1913. STRAY PARAGRAPHS "A hall will mean a lot of work for a few willing workers; a good deal of pleasure; possibly, for people who don't do any of the work; and very little financial benefit to the Hospital Board at the end." —Thus Mr. Marfell, chairman of the Stratford Hospital Board sums up the hospital bull. The Board is disinclined to run the suggested ball itself, taking the stand that the hospital ball should be the outcome of the effort of the citizens. Messrs. Masters & Son are erecting a cement store alongside their bulk store in Broadway North. Under the new arrangements entered into with the manufacturers, the firm will now have at all times a minimum of 25 tons of Golden Bay cement in stock, and the new store | is being fitted in order to keep the ! cement thoroughly dry. Golden Bay cement has taken up a foremost place in this district, the result of the pushing methods of the agents arid the high-class cement supplied. "Work-shv individuals." This is an expressive term, and explains itself. Everyone knows what a "work-shy individual" is. Even Stratford has a few specimens. The Hospital Board yesterday confirmed a resolution of the Nelson Board, calling the attention of the Government to a resolution 1 unanimously passed at a conference of hospital and charitable hoards in Wellington in .Tune, 1011, requesting the Government to found some State colony or farm, where wastrels, confirmed drunkards and other such work-shy individuals could be sent, and earnestly requests that the question of carrying such resolution into effect shall be brought before the consideration of Parliament at its next session. Dr. D. Steven, medical superintendent of the Stratford Hospital, who is absent on leave on account of a septic thumb, has been granted an extension of leave. In a letter to the Board he states that his thumb lias given him more trouble than he expected. Tie forwarded a medical certificate to the effect that he would l not be able to resume his professional work until the middle of March. Messrs. Henrv and F. Brown and Mr. C. Ahier were in Stratford yesterday. BERNARD'S PICTURES ■ To-night sees the last of the present 1 programme. Right up to the highest \ level of perfection, these pictures have I given unbounded pleasure and satisfacj tion. A big bill is promised for toj morrow's change. | A cottage in Cordelia >i reef, nnoccuj pied at present, and the property of I Miss M. E. Burgess, was entered during j the last dnv or two, and sundry rolls of I wall paper stolen. The matter is in the ■, hands of the police.
