Trentham, Last Night,
Gusty, variable winds and a brilliant sun to-day caused the fifth day's shooting of the Trentham championship meeting to be of a most erratic character. The first- match completed was the Wellington Match at 500 and 000 yards. Here some of the Dominion's best marksmen met with disaster. Duncan, the Millerton ex-champion, came back from the 5000 yards range with a possible of 50, but could only aggregate 8.3. Fogerty, a tyro, from Duncdin, put on 50 at 500 yards, and missed the target altogether with his last two shots at GOO yards. The scores in the Canterbury Match ranged from 9 to 47, and over 80 per cent, of the competitors {piled to total more than 39.
The Standard Test Match was concluded to-day, having been extended over three days. This match was both instructive and interesting, and was carried out under the direction of Captain Wallingford, who was somewhat of a revelation to many of the newcomers. This match was a complete success, and was the most popular of all the service matches with the competitors. The match included snap-shooting, application, grouping and rapid shooting.
